Good post. Not sure I agree with all of it, but insightful, as always.
FYI, Digby is a "she." One of the shibboleths of the Lefty blogosphere (Digby & Hilzoy so far), are these anonymous bloggers, who deliberately obscure even their sex, and then freak out when you call them 'he.' I fell for it too.
So, when in doubt on these types, say 'she' and you'll have a better batting average. :)
Anyway, I think 'she' is onto something with her pop psychology. The reality is probably somewhere in-between or a mix of both her views and yours.

Is this comment spam? Then, in addition to whatever other spam filtering you are using, add a 'close comments' feature. You can set them for 21 days or 14 days or whatever. They simply shut off the comment function on old posts. By definition, it chokes the spamming down to a manageable size.

Your access logs should show the IP's. It may be possible to ban the IPs outright, thus keeping them away, before Akismet has to look at them.

I think that you miss the mark a bit with your focus on "root causes." Think of it more operationally, more tactically. The war has created jihadi veterans, trained them, given them 'street cred' on their return home, etc. We all understand and agree that the war in Afghanistan against the Soviets was a boon to Islamic radicals of the Eighties. Not because the Soviets stoked the 'root causes' of Muslim anti-communist feelings, but because of the operational effect of that war.
You can read how Michael Ware described this. He makes exactly the same point as the NIE.

You should do one more, mentioning Lincoln's reaction to the communique from a Union general (I dont think it was Meade) that trumpeted the victory as "driving the invaders from our sacred soil." Lincoln was apoplectic.

Twice USA has gone thru with a 1-1-1 record in group play, which is an indifferent performance. If this time, we end up 1-1-1 and do not go thru, we can't complain of cosmic injustice. We have had a couple breaks with that result in 1994 and 2002.
